In this world of information overload, it’s really hard to stand out and get noticed. Some people try to do this in an outrageous and over-the-top manner. If you remember Lady Gaga’s early days, you know what I’m talking about.
You don’t need to resort to gimmicks, necessarily. After all, you can’t be all flash and no substance. You do need to find ways to connect with your target market or audience and to stand out (in a good way!).
It’s all about branding, baby!
First, think about what your look and your messaging is saying. Do people get what you’re all about? I do so many things that it sometimes confuses people but one thing they do remember is that I’m a drum chick. That’s really different and stands out, especially because of my age. I tend to wear the colors of my logo: red, black, and purple and I’m often seen with a drum or at least my black rock chick jacket. This is all part of my brand.
How about you? Do you have a rockin’ brand? Or is everything just bland? What are you known for? How are you different?
I’ve worked with many bands, solo artists, and entrepreneurs who can’t answer the last two questions. It’s immediately evident in their online presence. There are others who really stand out. These are the ones who allow their personalities to show through. There is something different about them and it makes people pay attention and want to know more.
Cutting through the white noise
Before you take the stage or get that first client, you have to prime the pump a bit. This means you need to be active on social media but in ways that are authentic and creative. Some ways to do this include:
– Original posts and memes: This means you create them yourself, instead of sharing everyone else’s stuff.
– A variety of posts: If you have a business or a fan page, mix things up! Don’t keep saying the same things over and over again.
– Interaction: Ask questions, take a poll, or ask for feedback. If someone comments, comment back!
– Videos or livestream: Keep in mind that people will click off if the video is bad, boring, or too long. If you’re a speaker, band, or solo artist, ask me for feedback. You may not be getting booked or noticed because your talent isn’t where it needs to be.
– Appearances: These could be online or live. You don’t need to perform but you can just have a Q & A session, share your expertise, or do a workshop.
– Online interviews: This is a great way to build your fan base and promote your CD, book, program, show, or event.
– Have a rockin’ brand! This means your look, your logo, your photos, and yes, even your website and social media profiles. Everything needs to be clear and consistent.
