I've been an entrepreneur for 20 years and I'm considered an expert in ADHD, giftedness, creativity - and bouncing back! I've got an MBA and loads of marketing, branding, and social media experience, as well as certificates in drum therapy, therapeutic drumming, and Christian counseling. My book, Find Your Divine Rhythm: A Creative's Success Formula hit #1 on Kindle and is now on Amazon. I do talks and workshops and play percussion in a band on a regular basis. Isn't it time to find your rhythm and rock your life?

Missed Shots and Bouncing Back

Ever miss out on an opportunity? Maybe it’s a shot you took and missed. Or maybe it’s a shot you never went for. Yes, it’s basketball season, otherwise known as March Madness, so get ready for some sports analogies.

Even though I really don’t care for basketball, I know the pressure of setting up the shot and hoping you hit it. You dribble, run down the court and toss the ball towards the basket, hoping to hear that Swoosh!

It happens to musicians, artists, and speakers all the time. You often have to apply for opportunities. There is no guarantee that you’ll get a shot. Sometimes you audition but don’t get selected. This happened to two local, young singer/songwriters recently who auditioned for the TV show American Idol. They took the shot but they missed. Both are extremely talented. What happened?

It’s not about lack of talent

If these two young artists had bothered to tell me they were auditioning, I could’ve coached them. They didn’t miss out due to lack of talent. Their first mistake was that they selected the wrong competition. Unlike the show The Voice, American Idol isn’t based on just talent. They’re going for ratings. They’re looking for drama, compelling stories, and unusual characters. As with any singing competition, song selection is crucial.

So, whether you’re an entrepreneur, speaker, artist, or musician, I’ve got some universal tips for you. If you swung and missed, consider this:

1) It’s got to be a good fit! Whether we’re talking about ideal clients, events, or competitions, or even a new employer, it’s got to be a good match. It could just be a question of having the right style or services. This is where solid branding comes in.

2) You need to have a strategy. Before you apply or do a pitch to a prospect, you need to do your homework! Find out as much as you can. What are they looking for? If you’re not a good fit, it’s ok to pass!

3) You need the right mindset. If you go in with a defeatist attitude (“I’ll never get this. I’m not very good.”), you’re not going to get the shot. The same applies if you play the “blame game” (“It was rigged! They don’t know talent when they see it!”). Instead, use it as a learning experience. Did you know that basketball great Michael Jordan missed more than 9,000 shots in his career? Did he give up? Nope.

4) You need a good mentor or coach. Yep, that’s a shameless plug. It’s so frustrating when I see people struggle or miss a shot! Yes, I offer private and group coaching for creatives, musicians, and entrepreneurs.

Things don’t always go as planned. You’ve got to shake it off and keep on rockin’! If I can bounce back, so can you!
