What Are You Passionate About?

You know what’s missing from most people’s bios, About sections of their websites, and their elevator pitch? Passion.

It’s the band or solo artist who feels compelled to list the exact make and model of every single instrument, amp, and pedal they own. Or, the entrepreneur who lists their awards, degrees, and every single podcast they’ve appeared on. Here’s a hint: No one cares!

What would you list?

“What are their passions?” The woman at the assisted living facility leaned forward and clicked her pen in eager response. When she saw our expressions, she explained that it was for my in-laws’ bios. Apparently, the facility likes to add a little blurb with a photo to introduce new residents.

I’ve known my in-laws since 1976. I couldn’t think of a single thing. Neither could my husband. We drew a complete blank.

Would your family or your clients or fans know what you’re passionate about? Are you displaying passion in what you do? Do you have a cause you talk about? What about your faith? Would I hear your passion in your voice if I called you on the phone or met you for coffee?

On the drive home, I told my husband that if I get to that point where I have to go to one of these facilities to please tell them my passions.

“You can’t bring all your drums,” he joked.

“I can bring one,” I shot back, “And maybe my basket of percussion doo-dads to share.”

How’s that bio?

Many people make the mistake of writing a bio that reads like a resume. If you think that your bio and your About page are supposed to be all about you, you’re missing the mark.

Yes, you need to put some details on there about you and your background but you also want to be strategic. Whether you’re looking to get hired, sell CD’s, get clients, or get speaking gigs, you need to tell people what you can do for them. Remember, they’re constantly tuned to that radio station: WIIFM (What’s in it for me?)

• Lists the benefits of what you have to offer.
• Add some personal or funny tidbits.
• Throw in some stats that would impress your target market (“Spoken in front of a total of 10,000 people,” “Helped 200 entrepreneurs hit 6 figures,” “Wrote 6 Billboard #1 hits, etc.”).

I’ll be switching my website up soon, but here’s my current About page, if you’d like to take a peek. I have different bios of varying lengths that I can send to event organizers, podcast hosts, etc. I tailor them to the event or the show. Some may mention the drumming more, for example, while others may emphasize my speaking experience. I have special version for Christian organizations. Why? Because you need to know what would resonate with different audiences.

The Passion Project

Here’s a challenge for you: Pick one thing that you’ve always wanted to do. It could be something daring, something creative, or something fun. This could be your Passion Project. Map out a game plan and a timeline and just do it!

Life’s short. What will you do with the time you have?
