Are you feeling frustrated with marketing and social media? This can happen to anyone, including those of us who produce tons of content.

Ever feel like you’re lost in space? Do you spend hours by yourself churning out content and wonder if anyone will like it or respond to it? Now don’t get me wrong. I love to write. I also enjoy creating and editing videos and interviewing guests for my podcast. I’ve produced tons of newsletters, blog posts, YouTube videos, podcasts, and thousands of posts and tweets! Sometimes I get responses and other times, I wonder if anyone is out there.
I recently filled in for a podcast guest. I just spoke from the heart to encourage my fellow musicians, especially considering everything that’s going on in the world. It can be so disheartening, especially for creative, sensitive souls. Someone needed to hear that message, as I discovered.
Is anyone listening?
The ‘80’s band Missing Persons once wrote: “What are words for if no one is listening at all?” I think the problem is that there’s just too much content out there vying for our attention. Some people also don’t understand how social media works and how to engage their audience. Here are some tips:
1) Each social media platform is different and has a different audience. You can’t post the same way on Facebook and Snapchat as you do on LinkedIn. However, LinkedIn is looking more like Facebook but that’s another story for another time.
2) Your audience might not even be where you’re posting. Where are your peeps? Of course, Facebook doesn’t help matters by limiting who sees your posts. You can go old school and actually message or email people to check in or here’s a novel concept: Arrange time to chat by phone or in-person!
3) What and when you post are very important. This is where strategy comes in. You have to do some research and test things out. You also have to be true to who you are and try not to copy others. Don’t spam people or post the same thing 10x a week!
4) Use social media for good. Posts that inspire, educate, or entertain do best. Keep it short, sweet, and visual. And try keeping it positive. We could use more of that in this world.
If your online activity isn’t generating much activity or income after consistent effort and you want to throw in the towel, hold on! It may be time to re-assess. Maybe your brand or your message isn’t clear. Or maybe you need some help coming up with compelling content.
If it’s wearing you out, it’s ok to take a step back. I do this on occasion. This is not only so that I can do more live classes and events, but also to preserve my spirit and my sanity.
As Wilson and Phillips sang, sometimes you’ve got to “Hold on for one more day.” Use social media for good, keep the faith, and make genuine connections! You might actually meet some great people. I know I sure have!
